Solid Waste

Non-hazardous solid waste is managed in accordance with Subtitle D of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The 1991 EPA regulations establish criteria for municipal solid waste landfills. These regulations contain requirements or restrictions for location, facility operation and design, ground water monitoring, corrective actions, and closure/post-closure activities. EPA studies have revealed that more than 1 billion tons of solid waste are generated each year in the United States. Some solid waste can be recycled, incinerated, composted, or combusted as energy. Landfills, however, have historically been the least expensive way to dispose of solid waste. It is a violation of federal and state law if hazardous, liquid, or other unauthorized items are disposed in regular trash cans, dumpsters, or landfills. These items can also cause potential safety risks to personnel who transport solid waste or work at the landfills. Always be conscientious about keeping hazardous materials, hazardous waste, fluorescent lamps, ammunition, and liquids out of regular trash and dumpsters also since federal, state, Army, and Fort Rucker inspectors frequently look in dumpsters during inspections.

All recyclable materials should be segregated from solid waste before it is placed in a dumpster.  Please see the Recycling Information web page to find out what is recyclable on Fort Rucker.  All solid waste (except hazardous waste) is hauled to a local landfill which conforms to the requirements of RCRA Subtitle D. The recycling center location is in Building 9322.  The contact number is 255-0486.

A commercial contractor is currently contracted to remove solid waste from dumpsters on Fort Rucker. If you are experiencing any problems or issues with your dumpsters, please call (334) 255-1692.

If you are unsure if an item may be disposed in dumpsters, please call the DPW Environmental Office at 255-1658.

Note for contractors providing services to Fort Rucker: Please ensure you have guidance from your contracting officer's representative (COR) for proper disposal of your solid or hazardous waste.

Fort Rucker currently maintains one closed sanitary landfill. Groundwater and methane from the landfill are monitored at regular intervals to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations. Other closed landfills on post which were used in the past being investigated under the Installation Restoration Program to determine if they are causing any environmental damage/issues.
